Have you got the sweet gene?

Feel guilty about your sweet cravings and indulgences? Well, there's good news for you. Researchers have actually identified a gene, in both mice and people, which may be the blueprint for a "sweet" receptor in the taste buds. While not yet proven, many scientists believe the evidence to be strong. Linda Buck and colleagues at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Harvard Medical School feel that the gene is an excellent candidate for a sweet receptor and published their findings in the May issue of the journal Nature Neuroscience. Dr. Robert Margolskee of the Hughes Institute and the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York reports similar findings in the May issue of the journal Nature Genetics. The work could result in improved artificial sweeteners, and perhaps give us some insight into why people have a sweet tooth. For more Click Here
