Obesity is leading risk factor for diabetes

April 28, 2006 in Diabetes & Diabetes Prevention, Nutrition Topics in the News

Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the US have confirmed that obesity is a major contributing factor for developing diabetes.

Between 1997 and 2003, there was a 41 percent increase in diabetes in American adults. To examine the cause, researchers reviewed data from the 1997-2003 National Health Interview Survey, which collected data from 31,000 American adults per year. Researchers examined whether the increased incidence was due to a true rise in cases, or just better testing and diagnosis.

The study findings, published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that the incidence of the disease increased at a greater rate among obese people. Researchers concluded obesity is a leading factor in increasing the incidence of diabetes.
