What colour is your kiwi fruit?

November 10, 2005 in In Season & Other Fresh Foods

You're likely familiar with green-fleshed kiwifruit, and maybe you’ve even tried some with yellow flesh. But researchers in Italy and New Zealand are planning to tempt you with red-fleshed kiwi. This newly developed variety kiwifruit contains anthocyanins, potent antioxidants that give the flesh its red colour and which are thought to protect against heart disease and cancer.

Kiwifruit are among the most nutrient dense of all popular fruits and they're also high in antioxidants. But you might have to wait a while to try the new red kiwifruit: they are not yet widely available. The researchers were unable to estimate when the fruit will be available in Canada.
