Strange eats
Halloween may be over but there are still many spooky thrills to be had in the world of food. Visit James Lileks website at http://www.lileks.com/institute/gallery for hours of entertainment from his Gallery of Regrettable Food. Here youll find a simple introduction to poorly photographed foodstuffs and horrid recipes. Focusing on the food of the 40s, 50s and 60s, Lileks roasts recipe books from food companies of the time. He also takes a shot at Bad Ads and a Potpourri of cookbook covers, pictures and oddities. The recipes are indeed horrid with names like Onion & Green Pepper Stew, Meatballs in Pink Sauce, Bacon Milkshake and Corned Beef Salad Loaf. The accompanying pictures are positively putrid. Food styling and photography has definitely come a LONG way. Lileks wry observations and tongue-in-cheek humor will make you guffaw out loud. One caution this site is for adults only as some of the comments are not suitable for kids. If youre having a bad day, head to the Gallery. We guarantee youll come up laughing.

Another site that isnt quite as humorous but certainly falls under the category of strange eats is http://www.weird-food.com. Just be warned youll need a strong stomach for this experience. Some of the categories to choose from include bugs, reptile, amphibian, mineral and other. The website, Weird Foods from around the World, offers a world tour of strange eating customs, thankfully without photographs. Insects, bats, all kinds of critters make up the meals of some cultures. Unhatched duck embryos, or balut, are sold as street snacks in the Philippines. Durian, a fruit that smells like an outhouse, is a sought-after specialty. One persons gross is another persons feast.
