New Canadian Diabetes Association Meal Planning Guide

As of March 30, 2005, the Canadian Diabetes Association has a new meal planning guide available. This updated version has been promted by the introduction of new medications and new methods for the management of diabetes, and in response to health professional and consumer surveys.

The new guide is entitled Beyond the Basics: Meal Planning for Healthy Eating, Diabetes Prevention and Management. It is more compatible with Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating and with the systems used in Quebec and the US. The biggest change is in food groups containing carbohydrate (Grains & Starches, Fruits, Milk & Alternatives, Other Choices) where one serving of a food in each of these groups will provide 15 g of available carbohydrate (total carbohydrate minus fibre).

Beyond The Basics posters are available to Dietitians or Diabetes Nurse Educators; other diabetes resource material is available at www.diabetes.ca The larger manual, which will replace the Good Health Eating Guide Resource, will likely be available in 2006.
