Chocolate cheese

Is chocolate-flavoured cheese the next big trend? A New Zealand dairy co-operative, Fonterra, has been redefining cheese in Taiwan with its "Chesdale" chocolate cheese slices. The slices are popular, taking 10% of Taiwan's entire cheese market 6 months after their introduction. Dairy consumption in Asia is low by Western European standards, so chocolate cheese and other innovations are meant to help increase consumption.
Chocolate cheese slices are popular among parents of young children; the slices offer protein and calcium with less sugar than similar spread-like products. The company expects similar popularity with its next launch: chocolate cheese pancakes, which they expect will appeal to more traditional households. And they won't stop there: consumers in Singapore, Hong Kong and Malaysia can look forward to Chesdale Crunch, a cheese and cracker snack due to be released soon. Honest. www.fonterra.com
