Chondroitin and osteoarthritis

Wondering which supplement to take for joint pain? According to Austrian researchers, chondroitin sulfate reduces pain and improves joint function in people with osteoarthritis. They recently analyzed seven randomized, double blind trials using chondroitin sulfate in the treatment of osteoarthritis. A total of 372 patients with hip or knee osteoarthritis were treated with the supplement for at least 3 months. Compared to people taking the placebo, those taking the chondroitin had less pain and were able to cut back the dosage of their pain medication. What’s more, all seven studies showed that chondroitin helped. Unfortunately, the dose of chondroitin used was not indicated in the studies. If you are already taking this supplement, alone or in combination with glucosamine sulfate, studies find it to be very safe. Participants taking chondroitin do -not- have a higher incidence of side effects compared to those on placebo.
